May Day commemorates the journey of workers and laborers around the world. It is a day to stop and appreciate, and not take for granted, the rights we enjoy as working class people. Basic rights like the eight hour work day, the five day work week, and freedom from discrimination were not bestowed upon American workers like a gift, they were fought for and ripped from the hands of big business by working class people, activists and protestors.
As a nation of immigrants, American workers demanded a better life for themselves and their children. Today is a day to celebrate and reflect on the struggle that shaped our nations workplace, to not take it for granted, and to be wary of those who would take those rights away.
Today that battleground is in Arizona. In the wake of passing the unconstitutional and illegal SB1070 law, Arizona state govemernment is trampling American values and ushering in a new civil rights era. Say no to racial profiling, together let’s put a stop to SB1070 before it spreads.
